Maternal Health Information Management Roundtable

The meeting centered on Maternal Health Information Management, exploring how the effective handling, use, and sharing of information can improve maternal health outcomes. The "Maternal Health Information Management Roundtable" served as a platform for deep discussions about the current state of maternal health information systems, access, available and support for organization s use and sharing of data.
- What’s Working and What’s Not: We will take a look at existing maternal health information management practices, identifying what is functioning well and uncovering areas that need improvement. Participants will discuss the current barriers to effective information flow within the ecosystem.
- Ecosystem Support: This discussion will explore on what support systems—policy, organizational, or community-based—are necessary to improve information management in maternal health. The goal is to understand what ecosystem changes or resources are required to foster better information practices across sectors.
- The Data Imperative: A crucial part of the roundtable will bring forth examples of the importance of accurate, timely, and interoperable data in maternal health. We'll dive into how better information management can help improve outcomes, address gaps in care, and support more informed decision-making. Additionally, we’ll cover the ethical considerations and privacy concerns surrounding data use in this context, including.
We worked collaboratively to:
- Identify practical improvements in maternal health information management.
- Define ecosystem needs, including policy and infrastructure, to support better information flow.
- Clarify the role of data in shaping maternal health policies and interventions, while addressing privacy and ethical issues.
This roundtable brought together healthcare professionals, information management experts, policymakers, and advocates to share insights and propose solutions for improving how information is handled in the maternal health ecosystem.

This month we welcomed Dr. Kay Charles and Dr. Lisa Romero, expert advisors from the Center's for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Division of Reproductive Health as our special guests. They presented on the topic of the CDC's work on the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI) for maternal health. USCDI aids in the identification and establishment of domain and program-specific data element lists that operate as extensions to the existing USCDI. The program is to provide an avenue for federal and industry partners to establish, harmonize, and advance the use of interoperable data element lists that extend beyond the core data in the USCDI in order to meet specific programmatic and/or use case requirement.

We explored case studies on digital literacy, the fundamentals of designing digital maternal health education solutions, and paths to better access, engagement, experience, and behavior changes.

Unveiling Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs): Illuminating the Path to Safer Motherhood
In this Fall’s briefing, we presented a substantive discourse on State Level Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs). This event offered a comprehensive examination of the inner workings of MMRCs, encompassing their operational mechanisms, review processes, data utilization, findings dissemination, and stakeholder engagement.
The Briefing spotlights the pivotal role of MMRCs in maternal healthcare and their potential to leverage evolving datasets to drive positive change,

The panel includes Monica McLemore, PhD, MPH, RN from the University of Washington; Audra Meadows, MD, MPH from UC San Diego; and Joia Crear-Perry, MD, founder and president of the National Birth Equity Collaborative.
Afterwards, the floor was opened for a discussion on way technology can be used to address the urgent issue of rising preventable death rates in the US .

MATCH Coalition Co-Chair, Elizabeth Frazee discussed digital maternal health and telehealth access with Olivia Trusty, Subcommittee Policy Director, U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Communications, Media and Broadband Subcommittee. We took a closer look at the state of Mississippi and the efforts of Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) which have resulted in increased access to telehealth for everyone and especially rural Americans.

Virginia maternal health was in the spotlight for September 2022. We were honored to be joined by Rene Cabral-Daniels, JD, MPH, FHIMSS, CEO of Cenevia. Rene shared the approach that state officials, healthcare, and communities took to address maternal health issues and how those steps have proven to be successful. We also discussed current-day needs and plans that are being adopted by FQHCs and others to address new areas of need.

We were honored to welcome Farrell Turner, CPA, CPC, FHFMA, CEO of Turner & Company, LLC, and the President of the Alabama Rural Health Association. Together we explored the maternal health needs of the state of Alabama and approaches being taken state-wide to address those needs.

In the month of June, we turned our attention to the Liberty & Prosperity State, New Jersey. The state is working diligently to address its high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity. We explored both the related and associated challenges that are plaguing the state and what strategies are being taken to address them. Guest speakers included Amit Trivedi, MS, Sr. Director, Informatics & HIT Standards at @HIMSS who spoke on the importance of privacy and security in the management of maternal health data.
